Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) is a geocomposite material consisting of a core layer made of polypropylene / polyethylene and a filter layer made of spunbond geotextile material. The main function of Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) is to accelerate the process of draining pore water so that the soil consolidation process becomes faster. Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) is suitable for overcoming large consolidation problems and takes a long time, especially in compressible saturated clays. Usually this condition is often found on reclamation land, heaps on soft soil, opening new land for stacking fields and roads. The vertical drain products include:


GI Drain is a geosynthetic product for the classification of prefabricated vertical drains. The manufacture of GI Drain (prevabricated vertical drain/pvd) products refers to the main problem of compressible cohesive soft soils, which is a very long consolidation process when the construction load is given on it. This is due to the presence of pore water content and its physical properties which have very low permeability, so that when operated, the infrastructure above it always decreases which results in damage.

One of the easiest ways to overcome this is to provide a surcharge and preloading load before the permanent load is applied. With this load, the pore water pressure in the soil will increase and along with the consolidation process so that the effective soil stress also increases. Due to this process, the land property will increase significantly.

However, due to low permeability, the process of removing pore water takes a very long time, up to more than 60 years. Another problem is failure shear if the preload is applied too fast. Conventionally, the sand drain column method is commonly used to accelerate the release of pore water or the consolidation process. However, due to the high level of difficulty in implementation and the difficulty of quality control, GI Drain is currently the right choice. GI Drain has many advantages, namely a large discharge capacity, adequate tensile strength (tensile strength of drain), large permeability and permittivity of the filter and speed in implementation.
